We're calling for progress for Maldon

May 23, 2021 4:31 PM

While we nearly doubled our vote share in Maldon this election and came a strong second in the most recent elections, we know that the Tories have been asleep at the wheel for a long time in our part of Essex. Now they've been elected againt they must be held to account for the deluge of new houses built in Maldon, Heybridge, Southminster and Burnham with absolutely no realistic investment in infrastructure. How can planners and developers get away with this this? Something needs changing and the Lib Dems are committed to ringing the changes to a completely dysfunctional planning system. We want:

  1. A review of the algorithm that calculates the amount of additional health services required when hundreds and hundreds of new houses are built. How can it be that thousands of new houses have gone up with still no modern replacement for St Peters Hospital (after 30 years off promises) and zero attempts to attract more GPs to the District? Sign our petition here if you agree!
  2. We support affordable houses for local people and so we are calling for meaningful Section 106 agreements that tie developers into giving something significant back to communities instead of violating our countryside and simply walking away.
  3. We are calling for many more school places in the District, close to where people live so that local parents and children can walk and cycle to local schools.
  4. We are calling for investment in our roads and cycle ways, prompt and effective pothole mending on a very large scale, and a review of bridleways and footpaths to enable safe and enjoyable walking, riding and cycling off road.
